Vending Machine History and Use

Posted by on April 27, 2010

A vending machine is a coin-activated machine with which various objects may be retailed. Vending machines are not mistaken for coin-activated amusement rides or music machines.

The original business usage of vending machines happened early in the 18th century in England, where coin-activated “honour boxes” were used to sell snuff and tobacco.

These devices were also employed by the British-American communities during the century. The first practical, commercial utilization of vending machines took place in the United States in 1888, when vending machines were utilized to expand the sales of chewing gum in townships in which gum sales otherwise could not be made, including the waiting areas of the New York City elevated railway.

The American industry was restricted for the most part to penny-candy vending from then to 1926, when the modern occurrence of automatic retailing started by the establishment of cigarette vending machines. The original soft-drink machine followed around 1937.

As the Americas focused on its defense strength prior to its admission in the second World War, plant managements found that people could not work at full function for 10, 12, or longer hours if not given a lunch recess, so vending machines were proved the most expedient way of giving refreshments.

In the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine industry was found largely in plants and factories, and after that time, vending devices were being employed to provide a larger variety of freshly packaged along with prepackaged foods to take the place of or complement traditional in-plant food providing processes.

Refrigeration was adapted to vending machines to retail bottled soft drinks. The use of vending devices to vend items at competitive prices 24/7 without regard to breaks is now globally utilized.

The business has moved outside of plants and factories, and machines are often set in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and many other places.

Usually, vending service is provided by businesses (operators) that own and place devices at locations owned by others. Those corporations give complete upkeep and care, as well as items for retail, usually without any fees to the owners of the premises except occasionally a servicing charge.Vending machines have been utilized in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia since the 1880s, at the time when they were exploited to vend confectionery or tobacco items.

During modern times, the vending device business in these countries has closely reflected the marketing of vending machines in the US.

Vending in Japan began quickly during the 1960s and continued quickly into a highlighting element in that country’s distribution system.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Posted by on April 26, 2010

Take a plastic water bottle at your own hazard; the sway of public belief is coming back down away from you. From high rating documentaries, to books and campaigns, the hottest debate around is the terror around bottled water and the waste of resources that the industry demonstrates.

The processing, moving and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles demands large quantities of water as well as energy, and produces huge quantities of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the recent documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig states “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are publicizing the film with an across-America roadshow, collecting donations from people to take down their water bottle waste and taking their discarded plastic water bottle in exchange for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

A short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the acclaimed ‘The Story of Stuff’, this short film delves into the strategy that amounts to tricking Americans into consuming over hundreds of millions of bottles of water every week, compared with a few cents cost for clean tap water. Find the documentary on You Tube.

In her book ‘Bottlemania’, investigator Elizabeth Royte explores one of the greatest marketing tricks of the twentieth century and gives a super environmental alarm bell. She investigates the problems we must eventually understand. Who distributes the drinking water? What could happen when a bottled-water company possesses your town’s drinking water? Is the water coming out of the tap absolutely safe? What is the environmental footprint of production, transportation and waste of a single plastic water bottle?

Politicians all around the nation are acknowledging that they have to do something – notably when the places where they debate are major consumers of bottled water. How often do we view a politician at a debate sipping from a water bottle. They should be able to find a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, stated “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first place in Australia to prohibited the selling of bottled water. At least 60 places in the United States and a few cities in Canada and the UK have stopped the spending of taxpayer funds on bottled water.

It is doubtless that this dilemma will be on the agenda at World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the world’s most current water-related issues.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Posted by on April 14, 2010

The tensile-strength test is within itself destructive; during the process of fostering material, the sample is destroyed. Although this is not an issue when a large store of the sample material exists, nondestructive techniques are desirable for materials that are costly or hard to create or that have been constructed into finished or semifinished items.

Liquids

One common nondestructive process, employed to target surface breaks and flaws in samples, employs a penetrating fluid, which is either brightly dyed or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the metal and allowed to soak into any tiny cracks, the liquid is wiped off, leaving brightly revealed markings and imperfections. A similar technique, better for nonmetals, takes an electrically charged liquid rubbed on the material surface. After excess liquid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the nonmetal and draws to the cracks. Neither of these processes, however, can find internal flaws.

Radiation

Internal, like external flaws, can be detected through the use of X-ray or gamma-ray tests in which the radiation passes through the object and implicates on a subject photographic film. On some occasions, it is possible to target the X rays to a significant area within the material, permitting a three-dimensional image of the flaw identity along with its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of areas requires transmission of sound waves out of human hearing range within the test material. Under the reflection method, a sound wave is sent over one area of the subject, reflected with the other area, and returned back to a receiver located at the starting point. By finding a mark or imperfection in the material, the signal is reflected and its signal changed. The actual delay is a mark of the location of the mark; a map of the piece can be created to show the area and geometry of the flaws. In the through-transmission method, the transmitter and receiver need to be placed on the opposite areas of the test piece; delays in the signal of the sound waves are found to find and measure weaknesses. More often than not a water medium is employed in which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a sample are heavily influenced by its overall structure, magnetic techniques can be employed to measure the area and relative dimensions of voids and marks. In magnetic testing, an apparatus is utilized that contains a sizeable coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Nested in the first wire is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is secured an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the primary coil causes further current to charge in the secondary coil through the process of induction. If an iron rod is inserted into the secondary coil, obvious changes in the secondary current will implicate flaws in the bar. This process only isolates differentiations between sections along the length of a bar and will not locate elongated or continuous flaws that easily. A parallel skill, utilizing eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also might be used to locate flaws and breaks. A steady current is induced in the test material. Weaknesses that lie within the track of the current change resistance of the test sample; this determination should be measured under suitable processes.

Infrared

Infrared techniques also have been used to isolate material continuity in involved structural materials. While testing the strength of adhesive bonds in the sandwich core and facing sheets of a ordinary sandwich construction material like plywood, for example, heat is the surface of the sandwich skin item. Where bond lines appear to be continuous, those core parts provide a heat sink within the surface sample, and the localised temperatures of the surface will spread lightly along those bond lines. In the case that a bond line is too small, missing, or mistaken, however, local temperature will not adapt. Infrared photography of the surface will then demonstrate the placement and area of the defective adhesive. A similar method utilizes thermal coatings that can change hue upon reaching a determined heat.

Conclusively, nondestructive processes also are found to show a total knowledge of the mechanical aspects of a test sample. Ultrasonics and thermal techniques appear most trustworthy in this instance.
